The H2 Blue Hydrogen Test Kit uses hydrogen test drops that determine the hydrogen content of water through titration. If you are using molecular hydrogen tablets dissolved in water, you can use this test kit immediately after dissolving the tablet to determine its efficacy.

How it works

The H2 Blue Hydrogen Test Kit contains methylene blue and a platinum catalyst. Methylene blue is a biological dye used as an indicator in many pharmaceutical practices too. The H2 Blue solution reacts with hydrogen in water in the presence of the platinum catalyst and turns colourless. If the hydrogen concentration is equal to or above 0.1mg/l (ppm), the blue colour disappears, and the water turns clear. 

The test is usually carried out through titration, adding the H2 Blue reagent to 6 ml of water, drop by drop. The methylene blue continues to turn clear until the titration endpoint is reached and the blue dye is no longer consumed by the hydrogen. After this point, the water will become blue with the dye. The hydrogen content of the water is calculated by multiplying the number of H2 Blue drops used till the titration endpoint by 0.1. 

Some precautions must be taken during the test, though. For instance, the test must be carried out quickly as hydrogen tends to escape from water in an open container. The tested water should never be consumed, as the H2 Blue formula is not meant for consumption. Also, H2 Blue could stain clothes and surfaces, so care must be taken to avoid contact and wear protective gear.
